This week on Supernatural
If you haven’t been watching Supernatural every week like I have and getting more and more excited about how the war with the demon army will play out- things just got very interesting this week.
We had some of our first insights into who the Yellow Eyed Demon was and what the plan was.
SPOILER- don’t read further if you haven’t seen the epi…..
YED was Azazel. Yes- that is right! Fallen Angel who cavorts with the devil- the one who is sometimes called Satan but not Lucifer……
Azazeal was the name given to the lead demon in the UK show HEX and I am really looking forward to see what new mythos Kripke and company weave for us with this iteration of the demon. You can go to Wikipedia- look up Azazel and they even mention Supernatural and their portrayal of him as the YED….
The other surprise we got was that the demons have their own higher power…they look to Lucifer as the bringer of light to bring them their own form of Salvation. Those who felt last season’s House of the Holy episode will tie this to the ongoing struggle between good and evil. I think it is brilliant that the producers are building in a demon belief system – this makes them more human and will really blur the lines between right and wrong making for some truly interesting moral dillemmas.
This type of gray area was part of what really made the whole alien conspiracy theme in the X-Files great and why it went on so long- close to 7 seasons. When your heroes are faced with more and more difficult challenges and the rules are changed and the playing field expanded from saving one person to saving the world- our heroes must grow, adapt and come up to the challenge.
I have faith in Eric Kripke and his talented team – I cannot wait for the journey to continue!
