Supernatural: The CW’s Response + New Comics! January 17, 2008

Supernatural Scheduling and the CW

I got an e-mail yesterday announcing “Change is good”* direct from the CW with a link to thier new schedule including news that Supernatural would be moving off of the regular schedule with Reaper in its place. Tons of promotion of One Tree Hill- which is starting new episodes so that is fine, and more with Gossip Girl which is still not performing the way the network wants.

Mark Wilson at About.com had a great thing to say about this: ” Listen, CW execs: You think NBC has angry fans. You will learn what fan anger is if Supernatural, one of the most powerfully acted, strongly written series this side of Battlestar, does not get the support it deserves.”

Check out my DEMAND SUPERNATURAL THURSDAYS blog post for how you can register your dismay over this scheduling change.

New episodes do resume on January 31, 2008. See my earlier blog post for spoiler info and air dates.

NEW Supernatural Comics coming in April!

Wildstorm Comics- a division of DC Comics will be offering a revised omnibus of the Supernatural Origins comics that were such a big hit with their introduction last spring. The series deals with the back story to the CW show and details how John became a hunter after his wife Mary died and reveals much about Dean and Sam and their unconventional childhood. Several key story elements will be aligned with the series ( John having the Impala from the beginning) and a few other things. This means if you bought the complete 6 volumes as I did- they will become instant collectibles so keep them in good shape! Comic is being drawn by DC favorite Tim Sale.

Bigger news from BuddyTV is that the next installments will be coming in serial form in April as well. Supernatural: Rising Son, a six-issue miniseries that will tell another story about the young Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester. The first issue is set to hit stores on April 23 and will pick up a few years after Origins, following a 7-year-old Sam and 11-year-old Dean as they travel with their father, John. “Whereas the first series was more about John and his becoming a hunter, this one’s much more of a dysfunctional family story,” explains writer Peter Johnson, who’s also a co-executive producer on the TV show.

“We’re really going to explore the differences between Sam and Dean in this one,” Johnson continues. “Dean is becoming aware of what his dad’s up to and we’ll see him training and hunting a little bit, while John will start to key in on something different about Sam.”

The bad news about the series is that show creator Eric Kripke, who had a lot of input on Origins, couldn’t have any involvement due to the writers’ strike. While the strike doesn’t preclude people from writing comic books, Kripke bowed out due to the thin line between writing for a TV series and writing a comic based on a TV series.

Despite that, Johnson promises that the Rising Son story will fit in nicely with the show, and even feature some familiar faces such as Bobby, a fellow demon hunter. He also says that readers should expect “freakier monsters,” including “some badass female villains and a big bad villain that may have something to do with the TV show.”

There’s already talk of a third miniseries being planned that would bring the story right up to the pilot of the television series. Even with Supernatural being sidelined due to the writers’ strike, fans of the Winchester boys should have plenty of demon slaying fun to indulge in for months to come.

MY COMMENTARY- Badass female villains are not as interesting to Supernatural fans as the writers seem to think they are! Keep the focus on air and in print on the guys and their hunts and experiences.
